This morning daddy received the best father's day present -- Sawyer returning home. We were visited by all 4 teams of doctor's again this morning and since Sawyer has responded so well to the IV antibiotics we get to go home! We spent most of our morning in the playroom again, and also took a walk around the hospital in the wagon. Sawyer received his final dose of IV antibiotics at 11:00am, ate lunch, and we were discharged from the hospital!!!! We arrived home at ~2:00pm, and all took a nap. Sawyer has really enjoyed being home and has played with all of his toys and books today. We even took daddy out for dinner at our local Mexican restaurant. We are all so glad to be home. I am sure we will sleep great tonight!
Of course, we have several follow-up doctor's appointments, and Sawyer will be on oral antibiotics for the next 3 weeks! They must taste awful, as it took us awhile to get the first dose down him. We might have to resort to some M&M rewards to get him to take his medicine twice a day. We also have nose sprays and ear drops to use for several days.
So what caused all this? A blockage in his sinus cavity, which is close to the eye, and became infected. The sinus cavity is very close to the eye and the bone is "paper thin" and it doesn't take much for the infection to spread to the eye. It usually comes on fast, just like it did with Sawyer -- basically overnight. It is fairly rare, so the chance of it happening again are slim. We just have to keep his nose clear anytime he starts developing congestion. We hope that was our first and last hospitalization at Children's Mercy! Although, we feel blessed to live near such a wonderful hospital. All the doctors, nurses, and other staff we had interactions with were nothing but pleasant and helpful.
Thanks again for keeping Sawyer in your thoughts and prayers! Hope everyone else is doing well. Here are some pictures of our final day in the hospital.
Playing in the playroom at 7:30am this morning! (We were up at 5:30am for more antibiotics)
Playing in his bed -- aka the cage!
Playing with his new jumping frogs in his bed.
Back to the playroom for some hoop shooting with daddy!
Last round of IV antibiotics! (Look how much better his eye looks!)
Going for a walk in the wagon.
