Update on our rough week.....

After Sam took Sawyer to the doctor on Friday morning at 11:00am, he had a 2:30pm appointment for a CT scan at Children's Mercy South.  We went to have his CT scan done and the poor kid couldn't eat anything while waiting.  The CT scan showed Sawyer had post-septal orbital celllulitis and a small abcess near his ethmoid sinus.  In layman's terms -- he had a bad infection and needed to be admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics.  At ~5:15pm on Friday, we transported Sawyer to the downtown location of Children's Mercy to be admitted.  After seeing 2 sets of doctors (ENT & pediatrician), Sawyer was finally able to eat and have his antibiotics started ~8:30pm.  Unfortunately, he was not able to eat much last night, and what he did eat made him nauseated.  At the end of the day, we were all exhausted!  He did sleep well last night, despite having more antibiotics during the night and have the nurse's in and out to check on him.

This morning, Sawyer woke up hungry.  He ate a great breakfast, but was still complaining of eye pain.  His eye was still red, but not nearly as swollen.  Today, Sawyer has been visited by 4 different doctors -- ENT, infectious disease, pediatrician, and an eye doctor.  All think he is doing VERY WELL and responding to the antibiotics (which means he most likely will not have to have any surgery and there isn't any damage to his eye).  Sawyer has been very playful and is starting to become quite comfortable here in the hospital.  He has read a lot of books and spent most of his day in the playroom.  He had 2 sets of visitors -- the Webb Family and the Fatino Family which helped us pass the time.  He has been a great patient and has been cooperative with all the examinations he has been through.  He did have to have another IV started this afternoon, and did cry some but was able to recover quickly. There is a possibility we might be able to return home if he continues to do well with the IV antibiotics.  He will have to be on antibiotics for ~3 weeks when we go home and of course we will have some follow-up doctor's appointments.   He went to bed at 8:00pm tonight and is sleeping soundly.  We hope he wakes up in even better condition tomorrow!

Thanks for keeping Sawyer in your thoughts and prayers.  We also appreciate all the calls and visits.  We will continue to keep you updated.  Below are some pictures of Sawyer from today in the hospital.
