Sawyer's Hurt Heart
On Tuesday night, when I picked up Sawyer from school I could tell something was wrong. He didn't want to talk to me about his day at school during our 5 minute ride home and he had a grumpy attitude. As I would ask him a question, he would say "don't ask me that!" So, we listened to some Christmas music on the ride home. Once we arrived home, he still wasn't himself. Eventually, he finally told me he had been on the "naughty list" at school and didn't get any candy today. At school, "Elfie the Elf" watches all the kids in his classroom and his teachers place kids on a naughty or nice list according to their behavior and those on the nice list are rewarded with a piece of candy after naptime. He had gotten in trouble for hitting another kid after the kid had pushed him, according to Sawyer. It was the first time he had ever been on the "naughty list" and you could tell his little heart was broken. We talked about it and agreed it was hard to always be good, but he would try to be better tomorrow. He told Sam about being on the naughty list when he arrived home from work. He was then his happy, cheerful self the rest of the evening. Just for the record -- he has been on the "nice list" every other day we have picked him up this week since this incident. I think being on the "naughty list" once was enough for him.
